Cusco Cathedral — formally the Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of the Assumption — stands on the northeast side of the Plaza de Armas, Cusco's main square. It isn't a single building but a three-church complex: the cathedral itself, flanked by the smaller El Triunfo and Sagrada Familia churches.

Construction ran from 1559 to 1654 — roughly a century, under five or more architects — producing a building that blends Gothic structure, Renaissance proportion, and Baroque ornament inside a Latin-cross floor plan. It's part of Cusco's UNESCO World Heritage listing (1983) and holds one of the largest collections of colonial-era art in South America, most of it from the Cusco School (Escuela Cuzqueña).

What sets it apart from most colonial churches: it was built directly on top of Kiswarkancha, the palace of Inca ruler Wiracocha, using stone hauled from the fortress of Sacsayhuamán — by Inca and Quechua laborers who, working under compulsion, still left recognizable pieces of their own culture inside the building. That tension runs through everything here, down to a Last Supper served with roasted guinea pig instead of lamb.

Built Over an Empire: The Inca Site and Why This Spot Was Chosen

Kiswarkancha: a palace before a cathedral

Before any Spanish stone was laid, this ground held Kiswarkancha, the residential palace of Wiracocha, the eighth Inca ruler, built roughly a century before the Spanish arrived. Beside it stood Suntur Wasi, a ceremonial and military building tied to the city's armory. Both were raised in classic Inca stonework — blocks cut and fitted so precisely that a blade won't slide between the joints, no mortar needed.

The Spanish did not stumble onto this site. They chose it deliberately, over easier and more available land nearby, specifically because it had belonged to an Inca ruler. Building the seat of the new bishopric directly over a royal palace was a statement of conquest as much as a construction decision.

Stone with a second life

The cathedral's walls are built from massive andesite blocks brought down from Sacsayhuamán, the Inca fortress on the hills above Cusco. This wasn't just convenient — pre-cut Inca stone was structurally superior to anything Spanish masons could quarry locally. Reusing it did double duty: it gave the new church stronger material, and it stripped some of the fortress's own symbolic authority, transferring that weight into the Catholic building rising in its place.

A signature that survived

Inca and Quechua laborers were compelled to build the very structure replacing their own sacred site. Within that constraint, at least one detail escaped editorial control: a jaguar head carved into the cathedral's doors — an indigenous motif worked, quite literally, into the entrance of the building meant to erase Inca power.

A Century Under Construction: 1559–1654

Three attempts at a site

The Spanish didn't settle on Kiswarkancha right away. A provisional cathedral went up first in 1539 over the ruins of Suntur Wasi — that building still stands today as El Triunfo. A second location, in the Cusipata area, was considered and dropped for being impractical at the scale the church needed. Only in 1553 did the church formally acquire the Kiswarkancha land, and construction under contract began in 1559, with work on-site starting the following year.

The architects

At least five architects oversaw the project across nearly a century. Juan Miguel de Veramendi, a Spanish architect and stonemason, drew the original plans and led construction from the start, working under the patronage of Cusco's first bishop, Vicente de Valverde. Others — including Juan Correa and Miguel Gutiérrez Sencio — took over in later phases; Gutiérrez Sencio is credited with finally completing the building in 1654.

The earthquake that reshaped the towers

In 1650, an earthquake struck Cusco and damaged the ribbed vault above the cathedral's façade. Rather than fully restore the original design, builders removed the top tier of both bell towers, giving the cathedral the lower, heavier silhouette it has today — a repair that became a permanent design choice.

Finished, not quite closed

The main structure was completed in 1654, with an inaugural mass held that August. Formal consecration didn't come until 1668. Even then, the complex kept growing: the adjoining Sagrada Familia church wasn't started until 1723, nearly seventy years later.

Architecture: Three Styles, One Building

A design assembled by five architects, not one

Because construction stretched across nearly a century and passed through several architects, the cathedral was never built from a single unified vision. Instead it layers three European styles on top of each other: Gothic structural bones (ribbed vaulting, verticality), Renaissance proportion and symmetry in the massing, and Baroque ornament concentrated on the façade — with touches of Plateresque detailing in the stonework. The result reads as one building, but it's really a century of changing taste stacked in sequence.

The floor plan

The cathedral follows a Latin-cross plan, divided into three naves of equal height — a central nave flanked by the "nave of the Gospel" and "nave of the Epistle," a layout borrowed from the cathedral of Jaén in Spain, which had already served as the model for Lima's cathedral. The building covers roughly 3,900 square meters.

Structurally, the whole roof rests on just 14 cruciform andesite pillars — a deliberately sparse skeleton that keeps the three-aisled interior open and unobstructed rather than cluttered with supports. It's a solution that lets the space read as vast rather than chopped into compartments, something rarer in colonial church design than it might seem.

Towers and façade

The façade faces southwest onto the Plaza de Armas and is flanked by two bell towers. Originally taller, both towers lost their uppermost tier after the 1650 earthquake damaged the ribbed vault near the roofline — repair crews chose to lower the profile rather than fully rebuild it, which is why the cathedral today reads as more solid and grounded than soaring. The side portals are more restrained and Mannerist in style; the central portal carries the building's clearest Baroque flourishes.

The Cusco School: Andean Faith Painted in European Technique

Same brush, different message

Hundreds of canvases from the Escuela Cuzqueña (Cusco School) hang throughout the cathedral, and this is where the label "colonial art" starts to undersell what's actually on the walls. The Cusco School began as a training program: Spanish painters taught European religious painting technique to Indigenous and mestizo artists, originally as a tool for religious conversion. What happened next wasn't fully controlled by that original intent — Andean painters used the technique they'd been taught to keep Andean symbolism, food, and dress alive on canvas, inside a Catholic building, with the church's own approval hanging on its walls.

Marcos Zapata's Last Supper

The cathedral's most famous painting is Marcos Zapata's Last Supper, painted around 1753. Zapata (c. 1710–1773), also known as Marcos Sapaca Inca, was one of the last major painters of the Cusco School and one of its most prolific — he's credited with roughly 200 works between 1748 and 1764.

His Last Supper mirrors the standard European composition almost exactly, except for what's on the table: instead of the traditional Paschal lamb, the central dish is roasted cuy (guinea pig) — a ceremonial Andean food and, at the time, one of only three domesticated mammals native to pre-Hispanic South America, alongside the llama and alpaca. The disciples also drink chicha, a traditional Andean corn beer.

A small but real point of debate: some art historians and guides describe the dish as an Andean viscacha (a wild chinchilla relative) rather than a guinea pig. The "guinea pig" reading is by far the more widely cited and the one repeated in most scholarship, but it's worth flagging as not 100% unanimous.

What makes the painting notable isn't just the substitution — it's that it survived. This was created during a period when the Inquisition was active in the Viceroyalty of Peru, yet the work wasn't suppressed. One explanation art historians offer: the church needed enormous volumes of art to fill its new buildings, Zapata was too prolific and useful a painter to punish, and a Andean-inflected Last Supper was, if anything, seen as a useful conversion tool rather than a threat.

The mountain-shaped Virgin

Repeated across several of the cathedral's chapels, the Virgin Mary appears wearing a triangular, mountain-shaped skirt, sometimes with a river running along the hem. Art historians connect this directly to Pachamama, the Andean earth mother — the mountain silhouette doubling as both the Virgin's robe and a sacred Andean landform.

Taken together, these paintings are the clearest evidence that the Cusco School wasn't a one-directional imposition. The Spanish set the format — composition, subject matter, technique. The content — what's on the plate, what shape the Virgin's robe takes — stayed Andean.

Treasures Inside: Silver, Cedar, and the María Angola Bell

The High Altar and choir

The cathedral's High Altar is solid silver, backed by an elaborately carved reredos. Nearby, the choir stalls — carved entirely from cedar — depict every one of Cusco's archbishops in relief, a continuous sculpted record of the diocese's leadership rather than a decorative flourish.

The Sacristy

The Sacristy holds around 40 portraits of Cusco's bishops and archbishops, starting with Vicente de Valverde, hung as one unbroken institutional lineage along the walls. It also houses a large cedar retablo, Cristo de la Agonía, attributed to Marcos Zapata, along with vestments and further silverwork — including, in a small adjoining chapel sometimes called the "Silver Room," an embossed silver coffin used to carry the Señor de los Temblores statue in procession, and a ceremonial trellis weighing up to 160 kilograms used during the Corpus Christi festival.

María Angola: the bell with a legend attached

In the cathedral's north tower hangs María Angola, cast in 1659, standing about 2.15 meters tall and weighing close to 5,980 kilograms — the largest bell in Peru and, by most accounts, one of the most significant in South America by size and tone. Local tradition holds it audible for well over 20 miles on a clear day.

The bell's name comes from its own founding legend: according to local tradition, an enslaved woman named María, brought from Angola, threw a handful of gold — some accounts say as much as 12 kilos — into the crucible while the bell was being cast, and the bell was named for her. It's a story that's part of local lore rather than documented fact, but it's told consistently enough across sources to be considered part of the cathedral's identity. A second, older bell, María de la Asunción, cast in 1550, hangs alongside it and is the oldest bell in the towers.

The Lord of the Earthquakes

A statue that predates the disaster it's known for

The Señor de los Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes) is a dark-toned, crucified Christ figure and Cusco's most venerated religious image — but it wasn't created in response to an earthquake. Tradition holds it was commissioned by order of King Philip II of Spain around 1570, decades before the event that made it famous, out of concern that the conversion of Cusco's indigenous population to Catholicism wasn't taking hold. The statue was carved and shipped from Spain.

The earthquake that gave it its name

In 1650, a major earthquake struck Cusco, damaging buildings across the city including the cathedral's own façade. According to tradition, the statue was carried out into the streets in procession during the tremors, and the destruction stopped shortly after — an event the city credited to the statue directly. It has been known as the Lord of the Earthquakes ever since, and it's still honored annually with a major procession, held on the Monday of Holy Week.

The darkened skin, and the painting that recorded it all

The statue's noticeably dark complexion is generally attributed to centuries of candle smoke and soot accumulating on its surface during processions and veneration — not its original coloring.

The cathedral also holds what is considered the oldest surviving painting in Cusco: a depiction of the 1650 earthquake itself, showing the crucifix being carried through the city's ruined streets. It's a rare instance of colonial religious art documenting a colonial-era event in something close to real time, rather than illustrating an imported Biblical scene.

One Complex, Three Churches: El Triunfo, Sagrada Familia, and the Side Chapels

El Triunfo: older than the cathedral itself

El Triunfo (Church of the Triumph) is the oldest building in the complex, first raised in 1538–1539 over the ruins of Suntur Wasi, before the current cathedral existed. It commemorates the Spanish victory over the forces of Manco Inca during the 1536 siege of Cusco — tradition credits the Virgin and the apostle Santiago with turning the battle in the Spanish favor, which is where the name "Triumph" comes from. The building seen today was largely rebuilt in the 1720s–30s after earlier versions were demolished.

Inside, El Triunfo holds the Cross of the Conquest — the cross tradition says Fray Vicente de Valverde carried during the capture of Atahualpa and later brought to Cusco — set into its main altar niche. A small crypt beneath the church holds a portion of the remains of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, the Cusco-born chronicler and author of Comentarios Reales de los Incas, one of the most important firsthand accounts of Inca society. Garcilaso died in Spain in 1616; part of his remains were returned to Cusco in 1978, while the other half stays interred in Córdoba.

Sagrada Familia: the latecomer

The Church of the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia), on the cathedral's other flank, is by far the youngest part of the complex. Construction began in 1723, stalled for a decade after the death of the commissioning bishop and the project's first architect, resumed in 1733, and was finally finished in 1735 — nearly a century after the main cathedral was completed.

The side chapels: a rotating gallery

Along the cathedral's own side aisles run a series of smaller chapels, each dedicated to a different saint and each holding its own selection of Cusco School paintings and sculpture. Rather than one central display, this turns the perimeter of the building into a kind of rotating gallery — visitors move chapel to chapel rather than viewing the collection in one fixed room, with the art distributed throughout the architecture itself.
